Hair in anime and video games can be any color of the visible spectrum and defy the laws of physics.
This is my list of 21 of the weirdest, most unrealistic, or just plain crazy examples of hairstyles in anime, manga, and video games.
(It was going to be top 20 but then I remembered an obvious one and didn’t want to take anyone off the list.)
#21. Cutie Honey
Though her original incarnation technically wasn’t a magical girl, this android is close enough to be considered the prototype of the “magical girl warrior” subgenre that includes Sailor Moon and Pretty Cure.
And she’s on the list because she’s a girl with the same kind of sideburns as every other Go Nagai protagonist.
The main character of Chrono Trigger, designed by Akira Toriyama of Dragon Ball fame.
Yeah, it’s not hard to see where he gets the nickname “bush head”. Out of all the “spiky hair” characters, he’s one of the spikiest. And seriously, I think his hair might be sharper than his katana.
#19. Sailor Moon
Still the most famous magical girl, and the first anime for a lot of people.
She probably has more hair-based nicknames than anyone else. Meatball head, dumpling, odango atama. Two little buns, and two very long ponytails coming out of them. Other characters have a similar hairstyle, but I’m pretty sure every one of them is a reference to her. Actually, did anyone even have “twintails” before her? (Pigtails, yes, but those are normally short.)
The villain from Final Fantasy VII, his sword is so long it doesn’t fit in the picture.
This is where we start to get into really odd hair physics. Look at his…bangs? They go up, then bend at a very sharp angle and go down again. There are quite a few characters with hair like this (including Aerith from the same game), but I picked Sephiroth to represent them because his hair is also silver and extremely long.
#17. Kaguya Nanbu
This lovely lady is one of the main characters in Endless Frontier, a spinoff of the Super Robot Wars series. Some characters in the game mistake her for a cow; I’ll leave it up to you to ponder why.
Yeah, okay, literally everything about her design is either as sexy as possible, or as cool as possible, or both, so maybe you didn’t notice, but her hair changes colors in the middle. And despite how long it is it somehow always stays out of the way when she’s swinging that huge sword around like it didn’t weigh anything.
#16. Sage Date
Sage of the Halo, the warrior of light from Ronin Warriors.
I know, his hair doesn’t look that unusual for anime. But here’s what’s weird about it, and unfortunately I couldn’t find a picture of this: when he meditates under a waterfall, his hair doesn’t move at all!
