Authors Answer 45 – Real World Influences in Fiction

Though some of the events I refer to are maybe not quite what you’d call major and more national than global.

I Read Encyclopedias for Fun

When drawing influence for books, authors look in many places. They may get ideas from around them, from people they know, or from history. Today is the fourteenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York. Events like this could have a big influence on writing.

Twin_Towers-NYCQuestion 45: It’s the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001. How much do major world events influence your writing?

Internet misogynists target Zoe Quinn

Zoe Quinn, the creator of the educational interactive fiction Depression Quest, has been targeted by the same anti-feminist nuts who keep giving gamers a bad name, predictably led by her ex-boyfriend.

She’s getting all kinds of harassment, even though as far as I can tell, the “worst” thing that she’s actually being accused of is sleeping with someone who is a reviewer but never actually reviewed her game.

The latest travesty of justice

Luke O’Donovan was attacked by a group of men shouting homophobic slurs at him, One of those men had also been caught on video participating in another attack, against a transgender woman. O’Donovan defended himself with a pocketknife and got his wounds treated at a medical center.

What kind of crazy corrupt court system does Atlanta have, to result in the outcome of O’Donovan himself being sent to prison while all of his attackers are still free? Remember again the attack that was caught on video, used as evidence in this case; without it, the punishment (of the victim) would have been even worse.
