Super Robot Wars V: haven’t seen some of these guys in a while

Up until today, about the only things known about Super Robot Wars V were that it has a pretty good series list including the debut of Yamato, and that it would be the first licensed SRW game ever available in English.  Which was enough to get my attention, but with this new video it’s looking more certain that this will be a really interesting one.

Well, THERE’S an unexpected crossover

Super Robot Wars XΩ continues to use its less structured format as a way to include pretty much anything it wants to. Idolm@ster Xenoglossia was a little surprising, and Crayon Shin-chan was something nobody could possibly have predicted (and probably never asked for), but this new one breaks down another boundary.

For the first time, a live action work is included in a SRW game. And it’s not any of the ones you probably just thought of. It’s not G-Savior either, the obscure live-action Gundam movie that some people think they’ve avoided solely because they didn’t want to open the door to live action.

But, well…

The King of the Monsters himself, fighting alongside the King of Braves and the King of Hearts.  And yes, Shinji is in some kind of Godzilla-Eva hybrid.

The Mazinger Z villains really hate the fact that Hideaki Anno is directing Godzilla: Resurgence right now…

MechaGodzilla is there too, so I guess you can’t say it doesn’t have mecha. (Also, Jet Alone from Neon Genesis Evangelion was based on Jet Jaguar.)

Why Anime Characters Call Their Attacks

Some people always like to ask why anime characters tend to announce what they’re doing, usually at high volume. Some suggest it has its origns in martial arts such as kendo, while other focus on justified examples like incantations and voice-activated weapons.

But at least as far as mecha pilots are concerned, this short scene from Super Robot Wars OG: The Inspector gives one other possible explanation.

Super Robot Wars V announced: Yamato, Cross Ange, Might Gaine

SRWOG: The Moon Dwellers isn’t out yet, but another new Super Robot Wars game has been announced for PS4 and Vita. Super Robot Wars V. (Surprisingly, for “Voyage”, not “Victory” or “Five”.)

Mecha That Changed Anime: Part 3

Gundam may be considered the start of the real robot genre, but it wasn’t really intended to start a subgenre from the start; it wasn’t until Super Dimension Fortress Macross in 1982 that the real robot genre was fully established; this was the first one with no trace of “super prototype” or anything like that; at least when it comes to the main mecha. (If you count the ship as super-ish, then the first mecha anime to avert it entirely was Armored Trooper VOTOMS in 1983.)

Macross transformed the whole idea of transformation, with planes that actually looked like planes transforming in ways that were actually physically possible.  And the Ground Effective Reinforcement of Winged Armament with Locomotive Knee-joint, or GERWALK mode, is where a trend of weird acronyms in anime started.

How would Kannazuki no Miko fit in Super Robot Wars?

Okay, I’ve probably written enough about one anime for one month, or maybe it just seems that way because of my relative lack of other posts. This is the last one, and only loosely related.

As I’ve said before, I like mecha, though I’m not as enthusiastic as Minerva X:

I also like crossovers, so when I see a series with mecha in it I sometimes try to think about how they’d fit into Super Robot Wars. Despite new series debuting every game there are still a fair number that would easily fit and haven’t been included (particularly since their increased willingness to include material that hasn’t been adapted into anime means there are even Mazinger and Getter series they haven’t used, such as the manga the page above is from), as well as a few which would present some obvious difficulties, notably Bokurano, where it’s a central concept that Zearth takes the life of its pilot every time it is used.

So, what about Kannazuki no Miko? The biggest apparent barrier to adapting it closely might be the same one as Bokurano; Ame no Murakumo requires the life of one of the priestesses to reset the damage done by Orochi. Simply leaving this aspect (or the reset itself) out wouldn’t really work because the idea that one of them must die is the only reason for Chikane becoming an Orochi. (Unless they change that to brainwashing or something.) Note, however, that unlike Zearth, this is only for the reset and not necessarily for every time Ame no Murakumo fights. (And having the reset actually happen in a crossover presents problems of its own.)
