“Favorite male anime character ever”
Kenshin Himura, the main character of Rurouni Kenshin. A former assassin who wanders around helping the helpless to atone for his past crimes. He swore to never kill again, so he fights with a sakabatō, a katana that has the edge on the wrong side.
He’s a hero who’s very serious about not killing, but he doesn’t completely lose it when he thinks that he did kill someone, which is one of the reasons I like him better than Vash the Stampede. (Spoilers for Trigun below the read more tag.)
Vash shows that it’s possible to take technical pacifism a little too far. He is manipulated into a situation where he literally does have no choice except to either kill a villain who wants to die, or watch his friends be killed, and he still spends the next episode moping about the fact that he killed someone.

True…although did you read the last arc of Kenshin, where a death led him to become a shell of himself for some time? He wasn’t the killer here, but that response leads me to believe that the pacifying Kenshin of of the Meiji Era may have reacted similarly to how Vash did.
Either way, Kenshin and Vash are actually my two favorite male protagonists. Super admirable, both!
